Portal 2 is completely finished and now I’m ready to submit all my work. This piece is only 2:30 minutes long. This is because I felt this piece only really worked as a short piece, and with little time to spend extending, I will leave it at 2 minutes 30. It is very electronic sounding, which is a big contrast to all the other pieces I have produced.

LEGO Marvel Finished
LEGO Marvel has finally been finished, however I am still having trouble with Portal 2. The finished product is around three minutes. It starts off quite light hearted, to fit in with the LEGO theme, but then starts to get a heroic sound to it near the end, fitting in with the ‘Marvel’ part. I have also included a modified version of the second melody that was shown in my last post.
Now I just need to finish Portal 2, which I have no real progress with thus far, and there isn’t much time left, so I may end up having to scrap this last piece entirely.
SKYRIM FINISHED
The Skyrim piece has been completed. I am pleased with the large sound I got from this piece. It matches other music from the series nicely. The main melody that can be heard in this piece is actually the same melody that is used in all the games in this series, I have just adapted it to fit my own theme. My main issue with this piece Is that it doesn’t sound very Nordic, mainly because I found that with pro tools alone I found it very difficult to produce a sound similar, so Instead I went for I more standard ‘fantasy adventure’ type piece. The start is supposed to represent the sort of quite, calm music that you would find in an old tavern, while the music quickly ramps up and becomes this big, epic heroic piece.
For mastering, I have used EQ, cutting off the very high and low ends as well as adding compression giving the piece a clean limit and finally I used the maxim plugin to give the piece a volume boost. All these plugins are spread across several AUX tracks.
I have also started the Portal 2 piece, however its proving to be very difficult to get started. I think I shall leave this one for now and try to get started on the LEGO piece next.
Start to the Sims 4 Theme
I have made a good start to the music for Sims 4, as well as adding more to the ‘research’ page, including the budget for my project.
The music is looking good so far, and bears similarities to the Sims 2 theme most, out of them all. First I tried a variety of different voices, finding which ones fit the Sims sound and which ones worked well together. You can hear a preview of the music as it is now below.
The Sound of Skyrim
This week I have spend a lot of time doing research into the genres of the games, and technology used in general, which I will put up soon.
Today I have been looking at Skyrim and came across this YouTube video. It shows how much effort and resources have been put into the sound of this game, and how the sound has influenced the overall product. Although I cannot put so much resources into my own work its something that I need to consider. The sound of the ‘Nordic’ chanting is very powerful, and I think is feeling needs to be somewhat reflected in my own work. Although I still want to focus on a calmer, more peaceful melody (to reflect the beautiful landscape in the game), some Nordic elements must be present.
